African American MLB Players Decline

Filed under: Uncategorized — Kyle Sielaff @ 11:51 am

For the third consecutive year the percentage of black MLB players has once again dropped. It was not long ago back in 1990 that 17 percent of the Major Leaguers were African American, now in 2011 a mere 8.5 percent of players are black. Interestingly enough, MLB received the highest grade for racial diversity. I think it can be quickly assessed that by no means is MLB discriminating against blacks, that question has yet to come into play, but individuals will certainly be quick to jump to conclusions. What do you make out the annually decreasing numbers of black MLB players.

  1. 27% of the league is Latino, and there has been an influx in the last decade of major league players from Asian nations. The league is not getting “whiter,” but growing more diverse, much like this country, and I fail to see any negatives in this.
