Novak Djokovic, unbeaten in 2011, won the Sony Ericsson Open today in Key Biscayne by beating world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in three sets. Nadal won the first set 6-4 and looked to be in control early. However, Djokivic came out in the second set hungry, and capitalized on uncharacteristic mistakes by Nadal. Novak won the second set 6-3.
The third set saw both players hold serve, and after getting to 6-6, the two entered a tiebreak to decide the championship. Breaking Nadal to go up 3-2, Djokovic was able to finish Nadal out and eventually win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Nadal had six double-faults today while Djokov had none. The match lasted 3 hours 21 minutes.
Djokovic is the most consistent player on the tour this year, but is still not a threat to Nadal in terms of rankings. He is well ahead in points of Djokovic, who two weeks ago overtook Roger Federer as the No. 2 player in the world. Federer lost to Nadal in the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open.
What a match it was– final set decided by a tiebreaker. That’s how a championship match should be played.
Novak just seems to be unbeatable right now. Nadal, the No. 1 player in the world lost to him at Indian Wells and now again at Crandon Park. He’s got to start receiving consideration for that No. 1 spot pretty soon.
