Breaking Down the SEO Men’s Final

Filed under: Uncategorized — magdebar @ 11:51 pm

No. 2 Novak Djokovic entered today’s Sony Ericsson Open Men’s Final undefeated on the year and playing great tennis. No. 1 Rafael Nadal, looking to pick up his first Sony Ericsson Open title in three attempts, hoped to change that. And for the beginning of the first set it looked like he had.

But Djokovich bounced back en route to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win on the purple courts. Djokovic turned to his drop shot all day, randomly putting the ball in the front of the court and forcing Nadal to play the whole length of it. Nadal adjusted well for the most part and seemed to get some favorable no-calls on balls that I thought were out, but he did double fault six times. You can’t give points away to Djokovic like that…He’s just too good.

In the end though, stats don’t matter. Both men wanted that win bad. Unfortunately there had to be a loser, but it’s clear from the post-match hug that they both respect each other. I’m looking forward to this potentially becoming a new rivalry down the road. French Open, anyone?

Sidenote: I was really surprised at the amount of Djokovic supporters out at Crandon Park Tennis Center today. We all expect South Florida to root for Rafa and while the Spanish (and even one Brazilian) flags were flying, there were also quite a few Serbian flags representing the red, blue and white.
