Sony Ericsson Open: Davydenko Falls in Round One

Filed under: Uncategorized — magdebar @ 6:38 pm

When you see swarms of people crossing Crandon Boulevard, media descending on the Crandon Park Tennis Center, and bright purple and green everywhere you look, you know it’s that time of the year: the Sony Ericsson Open.

It’s been a long, but good day here in Key Biscayne.

The match that I covered this afternoon saw South African Kevin Anderson upset Russian Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Davydenko, a former Top 10 player, won this same tournament three years ago. But he’s faced adversity as of late, losing in the first round of the Australian Open and compiling a record of only 6-7 on the year. Anderson dominated this match with his powerful serve and broke three games to win it, including the first one of the match.

Afterwards, Anderson said “I was comfortable from the first point. I just felt I had to play my game. In the rallies and how the match was progressing, I felt pretty controlled.”
