Quick Hits

UM Tennis: Arguably the school’s best sport at the moment, the women’s tennis team climbed the ITA rankings up to number three today. Bianca Eichkorn, the ACC Player of the Week, will lead the Canes at home against No. 6 UNC tomorrow at 2PM.

UM Baseball: In Jim Morris’ return to the dugout, UM snapped a four game losing streak tonight in extra innings against Illinois State. Rony Rodriguez hit a 2-out home run in the bottom of the 11th to win the game 5-4. I really hope the team comes out hungry in tomorrow’s re-match or else it’s going to be a long season for the Canes.

Miami Heat: While the Canes ended their four game losing streak, another Miami team up US-1 added on to theirs. Another Heat game, another loss. The fifth in a row. This time against the middle-of-the-pack Portland Trail Blazers. You have to give the Trail Blazers credit. This marks their fourth win in a row, and seventh on the road. But if you’re a Heat fan…it’s time to admit there are some serious problems. The road won’t get any easier for the Heat, who face the Lakers Thursday and the Spurs on Monday.

NCAAF HOF: Two Miami Hurricanes –Coach Jimmy Johnson and Defensive Tackle Russell Maryland– made the ballot for the 2011 College Football Hall of Fame.

Tressel Suspended: In more college football news, ESPN reports that Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel was suspended two games and fined $250,000 by the University for failing to admit his knowledge of possible NCAA violations. Five players were suspended for their role in selling athletic memorabilia. According to Ohio State, Tressel was aware of the impending situation but didn’t notify the school. The NCAA is looking into the investigation and could place additional sanctions on the program.
