It is official: Kirby Hocutt stepped down from his position as Athletic Director at the University of Miami.

All the rumors floating around the past few days came to fruition early Friday evening. Hocutt–who became Miami’s AD in February 2008–will assume the same role at Texas Tech.

President Shalala said, “We did everything we could to convince him to stay, but in the end it was an intensely personal decision.”

Hocutt made drastic changes to the Athletic Department, including the firing of former football coach Randy Shannon, the firing of former soccer coach Tricia Taliaferro, and the hiring of Al Golden.

In a statement, Hocutt announced, “While I am proud of the progress and advancement we have made in Coral Gables, there is never an easy time to leave and the job at the University of Miami was not complete.”

It will be interesting to see how Hocutt’s overhaul is affected by his sudden departure.

  1. This means Frank Haith gets another year.

    • Hocutt had said that Haith’s job was safe for at least another year, so depending on who gets the job, maybe Haith won’t after all.
