Adam Wainwright Out For Season

Filed under: Major League Baseball — michaelperchick @ 10:45 am

Last season, Joe Nathan was the All-Star pitcher done before the season.  This season, the mantle goes to Adam Wainwright.  Wainwright is scheduled for Tommy John surgery after complaining about stiffness in his arm after a throwing session on Monday.

Wainwright won 20 games for the first time in his career last season, while posting a career-best 2.42 ERA.  Over the past four seasons, he’s seen his ERA, WHIP, and BAA drop every single season.

With the Cardinals already dealing with the Albert Pujols contract situation, the last thing they needed was to lose their ace pitcher.

How will this shift the power balance in the NL Central and baseball?  Will the Cardinals, who faded down the stretch last season, need to make a deal to shore up their staff, or rely on help from their farm system to help make up for Wainwright’s loss?
