Eye of the Hurricane

Tuesday’s Quick Hits

Firstly, yesterday the 2011 football schedule was released.

Miami will open at Maryland on Monday, September 5th, and its first home game will be against Ohio Sate on Saturday, September 17th.  A week later, the Canes will play the Kansas State Wildcats at home.

On October 1st, the Canes will get their late ‘warmup’ game against Bethune-Cookman before diving into conference play.

Miami will then play at Virginia Tech, at North Carolina, vs Georgia Tech, vs Virginia, vs Duke, at Florida State, at USF, and finish the season home against Boston College.

All games are on Saturday except for the home matchup against Virginia, which will be on a Thursday.

Early predictions–

The Maryland game could realistically go either way, lose to Ohio State and at least two ACC opponents (take your pick of VTech, UNC, GTech, FSU or BC), and finish at best 9-3.  After four underachieving seasons, it would not surprise me to see the Canes finish 6-6 and lose a few more winnable matchups before Al Golden begins to bring in his own strong recruiting classes.

In other news: The Marlins took their first look at their new stadium on the grounds of the old Orange Bowl.  The team took batting practice in front of reporters and construction staff, with Mike Stanton (as reported by Manny Navarro) hitting a shot above the upper-deck onto the catwalk.  The team will open at the new stadium on opening day, 2012.

Radziewski

Coach Jim Morris declared his own opening-day starter today, going with Freshman lefty Bryan Radziewski.

The Miami native will start on Friday against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, whom the Hurricanes swept in last year’s opening series.  Expect Zeke Devoss to lead off for the Canes, and Harold Martinez to bat third or fourth with his proven power.  Also watch out for first-basemen Cade Kreuter, the transfer from USC.  At all of the batting practices I have been to, his power has been the most impressive on a consistent basis.

The Heat play the Pacers tonight at Indiana and Frank Haith takes the Hurricanes basketball team to UNC-Greensboro tonight for their last non-conference game of the season.  Both games are scheduled to start at 7 o’clock.
