Santonio Holmes to the Jets

Filed under: Uncategorized — jbassman @ 7:55 pm

For a paltry 5th round pick the Jets picked up former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes, who will be suspended for 4 games. Yes this supposed to send some sort of message to the team, unfortunately all it says is how hypocritical the team is being. Franchise Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger screws up twice but since there are no charges no big deal, Holmes gets shipped out quickly and for what appears to be little value.

There’s more to this story though, considering Big Ben’s commitment has been questioned by many Steelers. Hines Ward was very vocal on this subject, and he is a player who works his butt off and is considered one of the best blocking receivers in the game. There is certainly turmoil in Pittsburgh heading into draft day, will they turn it around?

The truth is winning still trumps all, and this franchise has certainly proven capable of that. With 2 recent Super Bowl wins this team will still be very competitive. Problems are happening in many NFL cities and it’s only April. This NFL season should be interesting, and the off season story lines will keep football lovers wondering what will happen next.

  1. As much as I love Santonio, he was arrested within the first three weeks of being drafted, has used drugs when he’s not supposed to, supposedly threw a drink in a girl’s face, and told a fan via twitter to kill himself. Since he actually has charges against him, the Rooney’s dumped him. I’m not saying Ben is much better in terms of how he acts, he’s done some dumb things–and his “punishment” is still yet to be determined by Art Rooney. I wouldn’t say it’s hypocritical of the team just yet, because if we’re talking about a “3 strikes and you’re out” type of situation, Ben still has one more shot, and I think even as dumb as he can be sometimes, that message finally got through to him. And you also have to take into consideration–what if Ben didn’t do anything to either of these women and they just see dollar signs? granted, next time he will be smarter (hopefully) and not put himself in a position to have his name smeared with untrue allegations, but I think it would be unfair to get rid of him at this point if he’s innocent in both situations.

    • I see your point and it is quite valid, I concede that. So the motorcycle incident is ok since he just hurt himself and risked the future of the team? Sure there was no legal issue, but that was awfully stupid. I can be very critical of people suing athletes, hoping to get some easy quick cash rather than take up time, but this happening again to the same guy has to mean something. There are tons of more famous players than him so why him again? He really just needs to find a way to avoid these situations altogether or he’ll win the dubious title of dumbest quarterback to have won 2 rings.
