Haith to Wake Forest

Now that Dino Gaudio is out at Wake Forest, many people are speculating that on their list of possible candidates could be UM’s Frank Haith.  Many say that Haith’s Hurricanes beating the Demon Deacons in the first round of the ACC tournament was a key factor in the decision for fire Gaudio.

Haith has several factors going for him.  He is from the North Carolina area, growing up 45 minutes from Winston-Salem.  He went to school at Elon which is also 45 minutes from the Wake Forest campus.  He was also an assistant coach under the late Skip Prosser for four years and did great work in recruiting to help bring the program back to national prominence.  He has always recruited well from the North Carolina area, having three players that started some for Miami this year from the state (Adams, Gamble, and Johnson).  Before that, he had the likes of Jimmy Graham and Anthony King who were from the Tarheel State.

Haith also has one big thing going against him.  Most people felt like the reason that Gaudio was let go was because none of the players on the team liked him at all.  However, when the Athletic Director broke the news, the reason that they gave was Gaudio’s lack of postseason success.  Haith has been to the NCAA tournament just once, and made no postseason event this year despite a solid run in the ACC tournament.  While Haith might be a great fit for the program, it would be hard to justify to the fans and boosters dumping a guy that has taken you to two straight NCAA tournaments for a guy who didn’t make the NIT.

Stay tuned sports fans and we’ll see if Miami is in fact doing their own coach search soon.
