Women’s basketball finally gets attention

Please forgive the publishing time as I just got back from newspaper deadline about an hour and a half ago.

Since then I’ve been writing an article for a School of Communication scholarship and slowly realizing that the women’s basketball team is in the WNIT championship game.

I know what you’re thinking: It’s the WNIT.

But think of it this way: Before this playoff run, the program had never won consecutive playoff games.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday Katie Meier, Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams can hoist whatever trophy is given out to the lower-tier tournament champion.

With this playoff run, Meier saved her job.

With this playoff run, the University of Miami has its best shot at a team national championship since the Class of 2011 arrived on campus.

During tonight’s 12-5 victory over Florida Atlantic in baseball, the public address announcer updated the crowd on the score, and it garnered an impressive applause.

After the game, Jim Morris opened up his press conference by saying, “How about those girls?!”

The Little Team That Could has finally gotten the attention of the other Hurricane sports’ coaches and athletes.

Mind you, it’s the same team that was considered lucky on a night when a couple hundred people showed up for a home game at the BankUnited Center.
