Retired jerseys that don’t make sense

While millions watched the latest upset during March Madness, I caught the Miami Heat/Charlotte Bobcats game at the AmericanAirlines Arena.

Sure, the Heat won despite Dwyane Wade collecting just 14 points.

However, what caught my attention for the majority of the game was the fact that Dan Marino’s and Michael Jordan’s numbers are retired.

No Heat player can wear either No. 13 or No. 23, even though Marino and Jordan never put on the Adidas jersey. Heck, Dan the Man didn’t even play the sport!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Haven’t you noticed that before? Those have been around for years!”

You would be correct. But the thing is, it never truly dawned on me how ridiculous those jerseys hanging from “Overtown” look.

Let’s put it this way: It makes the decision to give Jack McClinton an “honorary” jersey less than a year removed from the University of Miami look sane.

Ironically enough, this was Jordan’s first trip to the AAA since purchasing the Bobcats, and the sport’s greatest player watched the game in Heat President Pat Riley’s row.

That’s the same man who decided to retire his number a few years ago.
