Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili dead in three seconds

Filed under: Uncategorized — nwhesper @ 10:59 pm

Nodar Kumaritashvili, Georgian luger, was on his final training run down Whistler track, the world’s fastest track, hours before the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies when it took a fatal turn. Gaining speeds of 90mph, a slight lift in Kumaritashvili’s head lead to a fatal crash where he flew over the track and into an uncovered steel pole.

Friday training runs were canceled for the athletes and precautions are being discussed due to the unperceived dangers of the $10o million track. Many of the athletes haven’t had access to the track until this week presenting a fear for several nations.

Kumaritashvili is the fourth competitor to die during training at the Winter Olympics, the first since 1992. There have been multiple crashes; competitors have had serious difficulties on the track already.

The remaining seven Georgian athletes have decided to dedicate their performances to their late team mate.
