Clean Sweep Of Polls

Filed under: Uncategorized — akean @ 5:07 pm

In the aftermath and controversy of this past weekend’s series against FSU, one thing is certain: The Hurricanes are number one! All four Division I college baseball polls came out with their rankings today, and the Canes took the top spot in each. For three of the polls – Baseball America, ESPN/USA Today and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association – it was simply a matter of hanging on to the top spot. But the wins in Tallahassee allowed the Canes jump up from No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll as well.

Overall, the Atlantic Coast Conference has established itself as Division I’s premier league in this week’s polls. UM, UNC and FSU make up the top 3 in each poll, with Virginia and NC State showing up in the bottom half of the Top 25 in most of the rankings. The Big 12, SEC and Pac-10 do each match the ACC’s total of five ranked teams in some polls, but none have multiple top-5 teams.

With four weeks to play, the ACC standings look like this:

ATLANTIC DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Florida State 18-3-0 .857 34-5-0 .872
NC State 12-8-0 .600 27-12-0 .692
Clemson 7-13-1 .357 19-20-1 .487
Wake Forest 7-13-0 .350 15-24-0 .385
Maryland 7-14-0 .333 24-18-0 .571
Boston College 5-16-0 .238 19-20-0 .487
COASTAL DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Miami 17-2-0 .895 33-4-0 .892
North Carolina 16-4-0 .800 34-7-0 .829
Virginia 13-8-0 .619 31-11-0 .738
Georgia Tech 10-11-0 .476 28-12-0 .700
Duke 6-13-1 .325 27-13-1 .671
Virginia Tech 4-17-0 .190 17-23-0 .425

As it stands now, Miami, FSU and UNC are all looking set to host NCAA Regional rounds. These three teams will presumably be in the top eight overall seeds of the tournament, and would therefore not meet until the College World Series in Omaha.
