Mr. Basketball Escapes Miami

Filed under: Uncategorized — hcumphrey @ 10:01 am

Ray Shipman of Monsignor Pace, a guard, won the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball Award. Elite collegiate basketball programs sign Mr. Basketballs–especially when Mr. Basketball’s high school is in the country. Miami’s coach, Frank Haith, deserves the credit and maybe even the contract he has received after leading the Hurricanes to the brink of the Sweet Sixteen, but he should not be satisfied yet. Shipman will play for U.F., not Miami, next year. Miami-Dade County does not produce many Mr. Basketballs; to earn his hefty extended contract, Haith ought to persuade the best local players to stay close to home.

  1. Sort of a stretch to say Haith isn’t earning his money because he didn’t pursuade a local kid to stay home. Miami Basketball is just getting on the map and Florida has two titles the past three seasons. Credit where credit is due, they’re more of a basketball power than we are and Billy Donovan is a more experienced and highly touted coach. Give Haith a few years to turn it around and local kids will stick around. Randy Shannon is able to keep the local kids home after 5-7 because of Miami Football’s HISTORY. Five titles since 1983 gives the program the ‘street cred’ the basketball program still lacks.
