The Beasts of Boca Raton

Small-time Florida Atlantic (19-11), the third-place team of the Sun Belt Conference, defeated Miami in Coral Gables last night. According to national rankings, Miami is the best team in the nation, but elite teams do not lose at home to teams that lose at home to Louisiana-Lafayette and get swept on the road by Louisiana-Monroe. Despite its struggles against the dregs of Louisianan college baseball this season, F.A.U. rapped 12 hits last night, scoring all of its runs in the first five innings. Miami’s John Housey allowed all of the runs (four were earned) and lasted for only those five innings. It is a long season, and the team is going to lose some games, but losing a lame mid-week game at home before a three-game series at perenially awesome Georgia Tech is a mistake. On the bright side, Miami can redeem itself next Wednesday, when it visits Boca Raton to play F.A.U. at 6:30 p.m. Ideally, this loss would embarrass and motivate the Hurricanes for the rest of the season. Perhaps the team lost focus after its recent ascent to the top national ranking, but that should not be a problem much longer.
