The Black Beahs

U.Maine was gamely hanging around in the fifth inning that I just watched at Mark Light. Miami seemed to be trotting out some mediocre pitchers, and Maine greeted them all with line drives. Maine’s pitchers were throwing meat, though, and people like Yonder Alonso and even Mark Sobolewski were thriving. I was sitting on the third-base side of the bleachers behind the plate, and I was amongst a feisty group of Maine fans who were quite noisy after a brief tie. It was a great college sports atmosphere because of the visiting fans, who were quite excited to root on their underdog squad, and it didn’t matter to them that it was against the scraps of Miami’s pitching staff. For Miami, it was a small game in between weekend A.C.C. series, and there were few Miami fans in attendance. Much of the bleachers was empty, but for the Maine players and fans who journeyed from snowy Orono on the banks of the Penobscot, it was one of the biggest games of the year. During every at-bat, Curt Smith, Kevin McAvoy, and every other Black Bear was greeted with copious cheers that must have made them feel somewhat at home.
